2021 University Finances

NUGW releases annual reports on Northwestern’s finances. NUGW’s report explains technical terms and provides appropriate context for data presented in the university’s own financial report. In doing so, we hope to empower workers across campus to organize for their fair share of the university’s massive financial holdings.

Below are a few highlights from this year’s report. Read the full report for more.

  • With Northwestern’s budget surplus alone, they can afford to repeat the $2,000 stimulus checks five and a half times, amounting to an $11k raise for grad workers
  • Even if the endowment drops to its current ‘target’ spending rate, Northwestern can expect to have an extra $80 million in payout next year
  • Despite this huge windfall, the inflation-adjusted PhD stipend decreased by 3.3% compared to 2018
